The Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS) is a national survey which monitors non-breeding waterbird populations across the UK and Ireland. The principal aims of WeBS are to identify population sizes, determine trends in numbers and distribution and to identify important sites for waterbirds.
See http://www.bto.org/volunteer-surveys/webs for more information.
At present, Lower Lough Erne and many small inland loughs in Co. Fermanagh are not adequately monitored. Wildfowlers’ participation in WeBS, with their intimate knowledge of local water bodies, could help achieve much greater coverage. Basic training and some equipment can be provided as required.
Any wildfowlers or others interested in surveying Lower Lough Erne, or a local inland lough (or part thereof), should contact Michael Stinson (British Trust for Ornithology Regional Representative, Co. Fermanagh) for further information; mick.stinson@hotmail.com or 078903258239.
